West Virginia Winter Weather Awareness Week

November 13th - November 19th, 2011

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has designated the week of November 13 through November 19, 2011 as West Virginia Winter Weather Awareness Week. The National Weather Service in Charleston, WV will take this opportunity to educate and remind all West Virginians of common hazards associated with the winter season. In addition, practical tips and information will be provided on how to keep safe throughout the upcoming winter.

...TODAY IS DAY SIX OF WINTER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN WEST 
VIRGINIA...


THE WINTER AWARENESS WEEK TOPIC FOR TODAY IS SCHOOL SAFETY DURING 
THE WINTER. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND PRINCIPALS NEED TO PLAN AND 
PREPARE FOR THE DANGERS WINTER CAN BRING FOR SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN.  
BEFORE WINTER WEATHER BEGINS...PROCEDURES AND PRACTICES NEED TO BE 
DETERMINED. THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN DEVELOPING A 
WINTER WEATHER SAFETY PLAN.


TO STAY UPDATED ON THE LATEST WEATHER FORECAST...THE USE OF A NOAA 
WEATHER RADIO IS ENCOURAGED. COMMERCIAL RADIO OR TELEVISION CAN ALSO 
BE MONITORED. ARRANGEMENTS WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES OR 
OTHER KNOWLEDGEABLE SOURCES TO RELAY IMPORTANT WEATHER INFORMATION 
CAN ALSO BE USEFUL. HAVING AN EFFICIENT PLAN IN PLACE WHEN SCHOOLS 
CLOSE DUE TO SNOW OR EXTREME COLD IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE STUDENTS 
SAFETY.


SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS SHOULD RECEIVE EXTRA TRAINING ON DRIVING DURING 
HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER. SNOW AND ICE CAN CREATE DANGEROUS DRIVING 
CONDITIONS IN A MATTER OF A FEW MINUTES. KNOWLEDGE OF SIGNS AND THE 
SYMPTOMS OF FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA IS ALSO ESSENTIAL.


WHEN CHILDREN ARE DROPPED OFF AT SCHOOL EARLY...THE SCHOOL SHOULD 
HAVE ACCOMMODATIONS TO MOVE THE CHILDREN INDOORS AS QUICKLY AS 
POSSIBLE.  


THIS IS WINTER WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN WEST VIRGINIA. PUBLIC 
INFORMATION STATEMENTS WILL BE ISSUED THROUGHOUT THE WEEK TO GIVE 
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION.
