FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR SW VA...SE WV AND NW NC
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BLACKSBURG VA
539 AM EDT FRI OCT 31 2014

.DISCUSSION...
FAIR WEATHER WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THE DAY...
THEN RAPIDLY DETERIORATE THIS EVENING AS A FAST MOVING DISTURBANCE
FROM CANADA MOVES SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY...THEN ACROSS THE
SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS TONIGHT AND SATURDAY. WINTER STORM
CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY IN THE HIGH COUNTRY OF NORTH CAROLINA...AND
INTO THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF FAR WESTERN VIRGINIA VICINITY OF
MOUNT ROGERS LATE TONIGHT AND SATURDAY. ELEVATIONS ABOVE 3000 FEET
WILL SEE THE GREATEST WINTRY IMPACT. SOME LIGHTER ACCUMULATIONS OF
SNOW ARE ALSO POSSIBLE IN THE WEST VIRGINIA HIGHLANDS AND ALONG THE
VIRGINIA-WEST VIRGINIA BORDER. NO SNOW ACCUMULATION IS ANTICIPATED
IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS DUE TO WARM SOIL TEMPERATURES. WITH THE
EXCEPTION OF THE HIGHER MOUNTAINS...MOST OF THE AREA WILL EXPERIENCE
A COLD RAIN...RAIN AMOUNTS AVERAGING A QUARTER /0.25/ TO THREE
QUARTERS /0.75/ OF AN INCH. STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED
TO DEVELOP ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE STORM SYSTEM...BEGINNING
SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND CONTINUING INTO SUNDAY BEFORE DIMINISHING.

THE SURGE OF COLD CANADIAN AIR THIS WEEKEND WILL LIKELY PRODUCE A
HARD/KILLING FREEZE IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH TEMPERATURES DIPPING INTO
THE 20S. NEAR FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE ALSO POSSIBLE EAST OF THE
MOUNTAINS.

THE COLD OUTBREAK WILL LAST THROUGH THE WEEKEND...FOLLOWED BY
WARMING TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEK.
